Open Source Web Journalism
Mission Statement
This project is a collection of code (written for PHP/MySQL) that has been designed and updated in the live environment of a high school journalism website which has been running since 2003, called the Paly Voice at http://voice.paly.net/.
At the moment, some of the code is messy to say the least, and it has been worked on by many students over the years, however our goal by releasing this code is to:
- Release our work in a public place.
- Allow other schools to more easily start a site of their own.
- Have a place where school journalism programs can collaborate on technical projects.
These were the three most important goals in starting such a project.
Unfortunately, there are few existing projects in this realm. The only three I found on SourceForge so far are called PacerCMS, NewsCloud and Krang.
- NewsCloud is, like this project, releasing code running a real web site, but it seems to be more geared toward a professional site.
- PacerCMS is another project that I have found, but it still seems early in development.
- Krang has been around for a long time, but it uses Perl and seems more complicated. (In addition, it produces static content.)
